1/2 DAY WORKSHOP

Thursday, April 29th 1:00pm – 4:00pm.

PSPF is proud to introduce a wonderful, and most assuredly transformative workshop by the world-renowned photographer, artist and director Matt Mahurin.

LIFE AS A CREATIVE PROFESSIONAL: The Imagemaker’s Handbook

NOTE: This is not a shooting class

A three hour interactive dialog on life as a creative professional

Matt will offer an overview of The Imagemaker’s Handbook, his 5 volume 2,000 page exploration on the creative vision and strategic tools essential to pursuing your passion with purpose.

In addition to discussing this project 20 years in the making that will be released in 2021, Matt will focus on the following practical concerns and philosophical concepts to empower and enrich your artistic adventure.

  • Establishing and protecting your unique creative voice.
  • Discussing the value of discipline, ambition, and guts to honestly declare what you want to achieve as an Imagemaker.
  • Sharing the behind the scenes process of projects ranging from shooting a photojournalism assignment in a third world country, to shooting and designing a record album package—as well as publishing a monograph of personal photographs, to having some of those photographs accepted into the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
  • The transition from photography to filmmaking through directing, shooting, and editing over 175 music videos, 2 feature films, and 2 documentaries.
  • Developing a creative process and business model of being a one-person-band to enhance your efficiency, explore your creativity, and expand your bank account.
  • How to direct the famous and handle the infamous subjects who will shine and whine before your camera.
  • Discussing the process of assignments from traditional darkroom photographs to modern digital imaging.
  • Tapping into the power of your emotions to fuel your success.
  • A wide open Q&A will give everyone the opportunity to seek information specific to their creative journey.

All of the above will be shared with honesty and humor through stories Matt has shared for nearly forty years as an illustrator, photographer, filmmaker, and educator. Everyone from aspiring Imagemakers just beginning their career to seasoned pros seeking a creative rebirth will be welcomed.

PRICE: $285

Plus $25 Admin Fee for each day of attendance (not per class).

Matt Mahurin has a way about him. A poet with a paintbrush, a photographer with a visionary focus. Whether still camera, video camera, traditional or digital art, he creates work that is hypnotic and charged with electricity. When you meet him in person it does not take long to realize that he is the real deal.

I took a workshop with Matt Mahurin that left my mind racing with new ideas and possibilities. It was truly a transformative experience. He said things that I needed to hear and told stories I will never forget. One of the best things I’ve ever done for myself as an artist.” —John Dinser

At the start of a memorable week Matt premiered a video he had just shot with Tom Waits, in which he did just about everything. He wrote, produced, built the sets, was the cinematographer and editor. Matt was the Rube Goldberg of artistic expression. In example after example—illustration, photography, film making, he would go into a situation and make it his own. I realized firsthand what a dedicated, challenging, sincere, and vanguard artist he was and still is. An artist’s artist.  Infinitely inspired and inspiring, I feel so fortunate to have been able to spend a few days learning about his process—without question, the most important teacher of my life.” —Evan Hurd

Matt Mahurin is an extraordinary talent, a sweet man and a generous teacher. He gave us the challenge of fulfilling an assignment that he was commissioned to do so we could experience his thought process and his technique. He is a rare bird and a treat to meet. Don’t miss the opportunity.”  -Amy Arbus

Making the decision to work with Matt will change your creative life. Not doing so, you’ll be missing the opportunity to work with one of the best creative minds working today. A true artist, teacher, and creative visionary. His hands-on approach was exceptional. Downright amazzzzing. The students were spellbound.” —William Deering
